Meditation is a word that is synonymous with spiritual practice and cultivation. But the word has so much more depth to it than just being associated with relaxation and stress reduction. Meditation in Sanskrit means to be free of measurement and comparison. You are simply at one with what is and not what should be. It is when we can embrace every experience of ours and look beyond it without judgement that we can be truly free from suffering. To be able to arrive at such a state requires commitment and practice, and it is through meditation that we can achieve this goal.
Most practitioners know that we calm our monkey minds by means of focusing on an object of meditation. Indeed even with that particular object, may it be our breath, an image or a mantra, it is still a thought. But at least we are attempting to replace our thousands of thoughts with one single thought. Stillness is attained and it is from which that we can create the space to gain clarity to this phenomenal world. Meditation is thus meant to lead us step to step towards sustainable contentment by going beyond the mind and returning to our primordial nature of peace and bliss.
So in adopting a meditation practice, be mindful of pitfalls that might lead you to contemplation and conceptual steps which might encourage your mind to remain unruly and undisciplined. The aim is to free your mind and not to have more thoughts crowding in on you.
